Every day from the age of five to thirteen, I sang this song along with my fellow classmates over a backing track played through a 90s PA system off of a compilation CD. I never thought about it, even long after I had left elementary school, but in recent years it seems that I've been questioning that daily ritual more closely. Should be celebrating this country, or any country for that matter? The fact that it engaged in government-led cultural genocide well into the late-1980s is a very hard pill to swallow.

I had wanted to do something like this for a while, but with the recent discoveries of the bodies of 215 indigenous children in unmarked graves near the Kamloops Indian Residential School site, and 715 near the Brandon Indian Residential School site, it seemed fitting.
It is time for Canadians to rethink what role our country has played during its colonial past, and what exactly its legacy should be, while also reevaluating who we immortalize in name and stone.

The other four songs, while not directly related, were created in the same musical mindset. Songs like "Birdfeeder" are almost a year old at this point, while "June" was completed almost entirely in the title month of this year.
